About This Site
This website was designed and created by Sam Davyson, an exstudent of the school, in the summer of 2006. He is a bit of a traditionalist writing all the files by hand with the open source Smultron text editor, learning quite a bit about php, html, css, js, and mysql as he did so. The site was uploaded using CyberDuck, the few images were prepared in PhotoShop and ImageWell, the load bar is from AjaxLoad.info, the rich text editor is by Kevin Roth, numerous tutorials from php.net helped debug the system, and everything (apart from some site testing) was done on a mac. Whilst Sam still maintains the publishing system, the actual content is managed by Mr McDaid.
It is designed to be viewed in any browser that you choose to use, and has been tested in Firefox 1.5, 2.0, Opera 8.0, 8.5, 9.0, Internet Explorer 6.0, 7.0 beta 2, and Safari 2. If you have any display issues with your browser choice even if it is not in this list then please contact sam [at] davyson.com who will be more than happy to make changes to accomodate you. Any browser really means any. You can find out more about this campaign at anybrowser.org.
How It Works
The site's content is all stored in a database system online. When you access a page, the combination of area and page are searched for on the database and the content associated with it are subsequently displayed. Information such as the other pages in a section, and the other areas on the site are also found by polling the database. This has fairly obvious benefits over making static pages, which mainly relate to the ease at which the site can be updated.
