On the page below are three examples of A2 coursework, along with some comments and marks.
The Good Good appreciation of problem, consideration of variables and use of theory e.g. surface area comments, although the graph work on molecular energy distribution was considered to be superfluous at this stage. Risk assessment lacked some detail. Quantities determined empirically via trail experiment.
Sensible modification chosen with regard to acid strength. Effective use of simple technique, repetition of experiments. Good quality results wrt concentration and different acid strengths although the temperature results seem dubious! The moderators felt there was insufficient credit in the concentration and different acid results for the full mark to be awarded and in this case temperature need not have been investigated. Conclusions consistent with results. Validity of the results considered. Valiant attempt at good chemical use of results incorporating good use of theory within the constraints of A Level knowledge. Verdict: 27/30. Download PDF. The BadSome aspects of the problem appreciated well e.g. use of excess acid. Calculation not clearly explained, concentration of acid confused with amount. Incomplete risk assessment. Sensible modification adopted. Good quality results for the effect of concentration, although the results for the change of temperature are less reliable but interesting! Validity of results not considered. Conclusions are consistent with results but there is some over interpretation. Some consideration of errors but no quantitative treatment Verdict: 21/30. Download PDF. The Ugly Some appreciation of problem and experimental procedures. Error in quantity of material calculation and apparatus selection. Variables not fully considered. Mistake on risk assessment form.
Reasonable set of experimental results. Sensible modification adopted. Measurements not reported. Validity of results not considered, confused conclusions, very weak error analysis. Verdict: 12/30. Download PDF. |
